Does Chile Require an Apostille?

Chile and the United States participate in the Hague Apostille Convention. The Convention entered into force for Chile on August 30, 2016.

When a Chilean government office, court, civil registry, university, bank, notary, attorney, or other organization requires proof that a U.S. public document is authentic, an apostille may be requested instead of embassy or consular legalization.

The correct apostille authority depends on where the document originated:

  • Florida public documents are generally apostilled by the Florida Department of State.

  • Documents issued in another state generally require an apostille from that state.

  • Federal documents follow a separate federal apostille process.

  •

The Chilean authority receiving your paperwork determines whether an apostille, certified copy, notarization, and

Spanish translation are required.

Common Documents Apostilled for Chile

U.S. documents may be presented in Chile for marriage, family, inheritance, property, education, employment, and business matters.

Common documents include:

  • Birth certificates

  • Marriage certificates

  • Death certificates

  • Divorce decrees

  • Powers of attorney

  • Single-status affidavits

  • Name-change orders

  • Adoption documents

  • Court documents

  • Diplomas and transcripts

  • Corporate and business documents

  • Notarized affidavits

  • Background checks

  • Parental authorizations

  • Medical documents

  • Other personal and legal records

Not sure whether your document qualifies? Send us a clear copy before mailing the original.

Birth Certificate Apostille for Chile

A U.S. birth certificate may be needed in Chile for:

  • Chilean nationality or citizenship matters

  • Registering an overseas birth

  • Marriage and civil-status matters

  • Residency applications

  • Family and parental proceedings

  • School or university enrollment

  • Inheritance matters

  • Other official applications

A Florida birth certificate must be a qualifying certified copy containing the appropriate official signature before it can receive a Florida apostille.

Hospital birth records, commemorative certificates, and ordinary photocopies are not eligible for a Florida apostille.

The Chilean authority may also require a Spanish translation of the birth certificate and apostille.

Marriage Certificate Apostille for Chile

A U.S. marriage certificate may be required in Chile for:

  • Registering or proving a foreign marriage

  • Updating civil-status information

  • Residency or family matters

  • Inheritance and estate proceedings

  • Pension or survivor-benefit matters

  • Property transactions

  • Banking and financial matters

  • Court proceedings

The marriage certificate must generally be an official certified copy. Its apostille must come from the state where the marriage certificate was issued—not necessarily the state where the document owner currently lives.

For example, an Ohio marriage certificate must generally receive its apostille from Ohio even if the client currently lives in Florida.

Death Certificate Apostille for Chile

A U.S. death certificate may be needed in Chile to:

  • Begin an inheritance or estate proceeding

  • Transfer or sell property

  • Close or access financial accounts

  • Address pension or survivor benefits

  • Update marriage or civil-status records

  • Complete insurance matters

  • Support court or legal proceedings

The document must generally be a certified death certificate issued by the appropriate state or local authority.

The apostille must come from the state where the death certificate was issued. A record issued by a federal agency, such as a Consular Report of Death Abroad, follows a separate federal process.

Before ordering, confirm whether the Chilean recipient requires a recently issued certificate and whether the apostille must also be translated into Spanish.

Special Power of Attorney Apostille for Chile

A special power of attorney may be used in Chile when someone in the United States needs another person to complete a specific transaction on their behalf.

Common uses include:

  • Selling or managing property

  • Handling an inheritance or estate

  • Completing banking transactions

  • Representing someone before a Chilean court

  • Signing documents before a Chilean notary

  • Managing a business transaction

  • Obtaining civil or government records

The Chilean attorney, notary, bank, court, or agency receiving the document should prepare or approve the wording before it is signed.

Before notarization, confirm:

  • The specific authority being granted

  • Whether the document must be written in Spanish

  • Whether witnesses are required

  • Whether a particular notarial certificate is required

  • Whether the apostille must also be translated

  • Whether the recipient will accept a document notarized in the United States

Once the document is correctly prepared and notarized in Florida, we can review it for the Florida apostille process.

Diploma and Transcript Apostille for Chile

Florida diplomas, transcripts, enrollment letters, and other educational records may be needed in Chile for:

  • University admission

  • Recognition of foreign studies

  • Employment

  • Professional licensing

  • Continuing education

  • Immigration or residency matters

Educational documents do not all follow the same apostille process. Some must contain an original signature from an authorized school official followed by proper notarization.

Contact us before submitting a diploma or transcript so we can review how the document was issued and signed.

Do Documents for Chile Need a Spanish Translation?

A U.S. document written in English may need a Spanish translation before it is accepted by a Chilean civil registry, court, university, bank, notary, government office, or other organization.

The receiving authority determines:

  • Whether a translation is required

  • Whether the apostille must also be translated

  • Whether a certified translation is acceptable

  • Whether the translation must be completed by a translator recognized in Chile

  • Whether the translation should be completed before or after the apostille

Some clients choose to have their documents translated after they arrive in Chile. Others are instructed to submit a certified Spanish translation completed in the United States.

Florida Notary & Apostille offers certified Spanish translation assistance when appropriate. Confirm the recipient’s exact translation requirements before ordering.

Documents From Other U.S. States

You do not have to live in Florida to contact us about apostille services.

A document issued in another state generally requires an apostille from the appropriate authority in that state.

If your Chile order includes documents from multiple states, each document must be routed to the proper apostille authority. For example, an Ohio marriage certificate and a Florida notarized power of attorney require two different state processes.

Send us the document types and issuing states so we can identify the appropriate process and determine whether nationwide coordination is available.
