What Is a Marriage Certificate Apostille?
An apostille is an official certification that verifies the authenticity of the signature and authority of the public official who issued or certified your document.

For a Florida-issued marriage certificate, the apostille is issued by the Florida Department of State.

Once attached to your marriage certificate, the apostille allows the document to be recognized for official use in countries that participate in the Hague Apostille Convention.

If the destination country is not part of the Hague Apostille Convention, your marriage certificate may require a different authentication or legalization process.

Not sure which process your country requires? We can help determine the correct service for your document.

When Would You Need a Marriage Certificate Apostille?
You may be asked to obtain an apostille for your marriage certificate when using it internationally for purposes such as:

-
Immigration or residency applications
-
Dual citizenship applications
-
Visa applications
-
Registering your marriage in another country
-
Spousal or family immigration matters
-
Citizenship by descent
-
Legal name changes
-
Overseas employment or benefits
-
Foreign court proceedings
-
International inheritance or estate matters
-
Property transactions abroad
-
Divorce or remarriage proceedings outside the United States

Requirements vary depending on the country where the document will be used and the agency requesting it

What Type of Marriage Certificate Do I Need?
For a Florida marriage record, you generally need an original certified copy issued by the appropriate Florida Clerk of the Circuit Court before it can receive a Florida apostille. The Florida Department of State specifically identifies original certified copies of marriage licenses obtained from a Clerk of Circuit Court as documents eligible for apostille certification.

A regular photocopy, scanned copy, or unofficial copy is generally not sufficient for this process.

We can review what you currently have and help determine whether your document appears appropriate for apostille processing or whether you need to obtain a new certified copy first.

Florida Marriage Certificate Apostille
Was your marriage certificate issued in Orlando, Miami, Tampa, Jacksonville, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, Kissimmee, Tallahassee, or anywhere else in Florida?

Florida marriage certificates that meet the state's requirements are apostilled through the Florida Department of State in Tallahassee.

Florida Notary & Apostille can coordinate the process for clients located throughout Florida as well as clients who now live in another state or country.

You do not need to live in Florida for us to assist with a Florida-issued marriage certificate.

Marriage Certificate Apostille for Immigration & Citizenship
Marriage certificates are frequently requested in international immigration and citizenship matters.

You may need an apostilled marriage certificate when applying for:

-
Citizenship by descent
-
Foreign residency
-
Spousal visas
-
Family reunification
-
Dual citizenship
-
Overseas marriage registration
-
Immigration benefits
-
Foreign passport or nationality matters

Because requirements can vary by country and receiving agency, it is important to confirm exactly how the receiving authority wants the document prepared.

If they also require the marriage certificate to be translated, we can coordinate certified
translation services as part of the process.
Need Your Marriage Certificate Translated Too?
Â
Many foreign authorities require documents to be submitted in the official language of the destination country.

Florida Notary & Apostille also offers certified translation services, allowing you to coordinate your:

Marriage Certificate + Apostille + Certified Translation

through one provider.

Ask us about combining your apostille and translation services when you contact us.
Apostille vs. Authentication — Which Do You Need?
Â
The destination country determines the process.

Hague Convention Country

If your document will be used in a country participating in the Hague Apostille Convention, an apostille may be required.

Non-Hague Country

If the destination country does not participate in the Apostille Convention, additional authentication or embassy/consular legalization may be required instead.

You don't have to determine this alone.

Tell us the country where your marriage certificate will be used, and we can help identify the appropriate process.
